  1. Prague remains the embodiment of architectural magnificence; its majestic castle perched high and well in view from across the Vltava River, with the historical Charles Bridge in the foreground. Gone are the days when it can sneak up on the unsuspecting visitor, as Prague now ranks with the European biggies on everyone’s must see list. For this reason, the city is in a state of flux like few others as it races often blindly towards westernization and fearfully is abandoning much of what set it apart from the rest of the pack in the first place. It is unfortunate that when places become popular, high rents oust out local institutions in favor of cookie cutter establishments bent on attracting as many tourist dollars as can be wrung from each and every passerby. My two visits were spaced apart by four years (1997/2001) and already, places I had managed to find on my first visit were either gone, or had changed markedly. Cheap restaurants and cheap hotels in Prague are at good value. Beers that were among the best in the country were no longer to be found. Of course, one can still find great places; it’s just that in Prague, you have to look a lot harder compared to the rest of the Czech Republic. It can only be hoped that local planners will come to understand that people visit this great city, not only to see fantastic architecture and museums but to experience the local culture as well. By all means, enjoy Prague, it has few rivals and is what many up and coming places are compared to, but do it as soon as you can.
